Welcome to the Small Festival
We are back again this year at the wonderful Kench Hill near Tenterden in Kent.
For anyone who hasn’t been… The Small Festival, now in it’s 20th year, is a completely participatory event - a space where people can explore and express their creative potential in an atmosphere of trust and support. All festival-goers are encouraged to participate and contribute – there is no divide between ‘performers’ and ‘audience’. The idea is that when everyone participates, the distinction between audience and entertainer dissolves and this creates a special quality, a rewarding alternative to pre-packaged entertainment. There is always an exciting array of events for adults and children – with workshops ranging from cookery workshops to calligraphy, men and women’s groups to open mic sessions, political debates, children’s crafts, drama, treasure hunts – basically, whatever participants bring. The schedule is created each year based on participants’ contributions. There is a cabaret in the evenings where you can perform music, put on a small sketch or play, or be part of the very appreciative audience. Everyone, including the organisers, volunteers their time freely and the result is a fantastic rich mix of workshops and entertainment. People discover hidden talents. Children love the free space, and parents benefit from their children’s freedom, allowing them to participate in the events. Book your place, learn about what to expect, accommodation and catering.
